Anna Leigh Waters, Tyson McGuffin, and Riley Newman All Earn Double Gold
What a day it was at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for the Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships presented by Pickleball Central! The morning started off with the Margaritaville Men’s Pro Singles Faceoff featuring Tyson McGuffin and JW Johnson. Franklin Sports donated $5,000 worth of pickleball products ($2,500 rewarded to the winner’s charity of choice and $2,500 to be given to a local Coachella Valley charity). McGuffin came out on top with a score of 11-9, 11-9 in an entertaining match that set the tone for the day.
Next up was the Pro Women’s Singles gold medal match pitting Anna Leigh Waters against Jill Braverman. It was all Waters early on as she opened up with a lead of 8-1 lead, yet Braverman had other ideas answering with a 6-0 run of her own to pull within one. Waters called a timeout, refocused and rattled off 3 straight points to win 11-7 in game one. Waters used that momentum to cruise in game number 2 by a score of 11-3 to claim her first Nationals singles title.
In the Pro Men’s Doubles gold medal match it was Tyson McGuffin / Riley Newman taking on Callan Dawson / JW Johnson. First Dawson tried to set up his offensive lob, but McGuffin and Newman neutralized it early and Dawson and Johnson could not find a rhythm losing games one and two by scores of 11-3, 11-1. In game number three Dawson and Johnson settled in a lot better and put up a fight for the first half. In the end it was too much fire from McGuffin and Newman as they would pull away and win game three (11-6) and claim the title of National Champions!
The finale of the day was set up to be an exciting match-up between Anna Leigh Waters / Leigh Waters and Lea Jansen / Irina Tereschenko. In game one the Waters jumped out early and often as they controlled the tempo, winning 11-2. In games two and three Jansen and Tereschenko were much more dialed-in but the Waters were just in the zone and took both games by a score of 11-5, 11-5. The victory gives the Waters duo back-to-back National Championships at Indian Wells!
