Players compete in the Pro Mixed Doubles gold medal match during the Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships Presented by Pickleball Central at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden Friday, Dec. 10, 2021. Newman Kovalova Wright
The crowds were roaring today at Day 5 of the 2021 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships presented by Pickleball Central as Military Appreciation Day was celebrated. All 49 courts stopped play to honor all those who serve to stand together in silence as 16-year-old Palm Springs High School Junior, Angolie Manjarrez sang the National Anthem and a first-time ever at National Championships Flyover by a C-47 from the Palm Springs Air Museum.
Following the flyover, USA Pickleball honored Mark Peifer, Director of Officiating and Head Referee for this year’s National Championships, for his service as a United States Navy nuclear submarine officer.
In the first meeting in the winner’s bracket final, Lindsey and Riley Newman took down Lucy Kovalova and Matt Wright (11-5, 11-8) but it was a different story in the 2 out of 3 in the gold medal match as Kovalova and Wright won (10-12, 8-11). That set up a one game to 15 for all the marbles at the Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships. It was all Riley Newman as he turned it up and took charge leading him and big sister Lindsey to the gold medal (15-9). It was a very emotional victory for the siblings as they came up just short in 2019 Nationals taking silver. Rounding out the top 3 was Anna Leigh Waters and Tyson McGuffin as they took home the bronze.
The amateur events of the day included Women’s Skill/Age Doubles 19+, 35+ and Mixed Skill Age Doubles 4.0 50+, 55+, 60+. All daily brackets and event results are available from the Event website main menu.
