Singles players compete in a match during the 2018 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championship at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018.

Tuesday, November 6

Tuesday was Singles Day at the Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships. A packed field of skill/age brackets for both Men and Women in 3.0-5.0 competed well into the evening hours. Many of the games best players were on hand.  For the men, it was a great day to watch Chuck Taylor 5.0 35+, Tyson McGuffin 5.0 19+, and Joey Farias 5.0 19+.  On the women’s side, Gee Gee Garvin 5.0 19+35+, and Jaci West 5.0 19+35+

The Men’s 5.0 19+ singles gold medal went to Tyson McGuffin who defeated Daniel Moore. McGuffin rolled to an 11-2 victory in game one but Moore really battled in game two, falling just short in an exciting 12-10 match. The evening also featured a very exciting match on the lady’s side as Gee Gee Garvin took on Michelle Esquivel, Esquivel eventually prevailed 11-6, 9-11, and 11-2.  To see all the results from the day’s action, visit the Events and Brackets link on the event website:  usapickleballnationalchampionships.com.

Tuesday also featured the St. Jude’s Skill Challenge Fundraiser and the first annual USAPA Parent/Child Round Robin. The total points winners from the skills challenge were Cherie Chad and Scott Lennan with a score of 151. Doug Blik and Stevo Alves were second with 146 points. Todd Barclay and Brian Barclay came in third with 131 points and Bonnie Koch and “Big Mike” Morian placed fourth with a total score of 126 points.  Overall, USAPA and the participants of this event raised a total of $13,000 dollars for St. Jude’s.

The day also featured the USAPA’s Parent/Child Round Robin. The new event was wildly popular with 25 teams and had a waiting list. Overall, the event generated a lot of excitement and positive feedback from the participants as tournament players were able to play competitively with their kids. It was also awesome seeing some of the top pro players such as Matt Goebel and his mother and Rob Davidson and his father.
