In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has resulted in the cancellation of events throughout the state of California and beyond over the past several months, pickleball’s premier event, the 2020 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships will not take place this year. The event was to be held October 31 – November 8, 2020 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
“We are disappointed that the National Championships cannot be held this year,” said USAPA Executive Director Justin Maloof, “but the health and safety of our players, fans, staff and sponsors is our top priority. We look forward to welcoming the pickleball community back at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for a fantastic event November 6-13, 2021.”
According to USAPA, additional details regarding this announcement are as follows:
- All Medalists from the 2019 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championship Open & Sr. Open (50+ & 65+) will receive pre-registration for the 2021 National Championships if they also participate in (1) one National Qualifying tournament between July 15, 2020 and July 15, 2021.
- All Gold Medalists in any age/skill event from the 2019 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships will still receive pre-registration for the 2021 National Championships if they also participate in (1) one National Qualifying tournament between July 15, 2020 and July 15, 2021.
- For the period between July 15, 2019 and July 15, 2020 – All Gold Medalists at a Tier 1 USAPA Sanctioned tournament or USAPA Regional Tournament will still receive pre-registration in the 2021 National Championships if they also participate in (1) one National Qualifying tournament between July 15, 2020 and July 15, 2021.
- For the period between July 15, 2019 and July 15, 2020 – Participation in any National Qualifying tournament during this time frame will be considered void.
- For the period between July 15, 2020 and July 15, 2021 – All Gold Medalists at a USAPA Regional Tournament will be eligible for pre-registration in the 2021 National Championships.
- For the period between July 15, 2020 and July 15, 2021 – Players who participate in a National Qualifier during this period will have the opportunity to register for open registration spots on August 1, 2021.
- In the event brackets are combined, medals will be issued to category winners but pre-registration opportunities for the 2021 National Championships are only for the combined bracket winners.

- Preregistration opportunities will begin again after July 15, 2020 within the USA Pickleball Regional Championship tournaments and the USA Pickleball National Indoor Championship in June 2021.
